Williams on the future
Williams on the future
Mary Edna Williams is
raring to go to work in her new role as 2009 president elect of the North
Carolina Association of REALTORS®. A licensed real estate
professional since 1986, Williams is known around the state for her leadership,
integrity and dedication to the profession and to life.
She is a past president
of the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS® and
has served in numerous other offices, committees and task forces for the
association throughout the years. Williams has also been active on the state
and national levels and works tirelessly to make sure the concerns of REALTORS® are
heard by state and national legislators.
When stricken with breast
cancer a few years ago, Williams earned the admiration of many by carrying
on with life and her brokerage firm, WHAT’S ITS NAME,
with strength and poise, refusing to give up or give in.
After being elected president-elect of NCAR in October, Williams spoke with
the REALTOR® Review about the race.
Q: Why did you want to run for state office?
A: I chose to run for office because these are BOLD times and BOLD times
require BOLD leadership.
I wanted to be in a position of influence to ensure that we have a business
environment that will help us thrive in the current market. This will require
working with political parties on both sides of the aisle to protect our
members and our industry.
I am prepared to lobby those in Congress to protect our industry and for
benefits our members are being denied such as affordable health insurance.
I felt by being part of the leadership team, membership would know that they
have a voice and that there would be transparency and accountability at the
state and local level.
Q: What are your goals for your new post in 2009? What issues will you focus
on?
A: My
hope is to see that communication is improved between the state association
and the local associations and more importantly, communication within our
membership. Our members need to know the value of being a REALTOR® and the
resources and tools available to them as a result of their membership.
And more public relations
is needed to explain to the consumer the value of partnering with a REALTOR® and
why for many now is a good time to buy a home.
Our members are just beginning to be educated on green building and I want to see that education encouraged also.
These are some of the issues close to my heart that played a part in my deciding to run for office initially and I hope to focus on these issues during my term.
Success
would not only benefit RRAR but the NCAR membership as a whole. I am honored
to be given this opportunity by my fellow REALTORS® and I urge
my fellow members to share with me their concerns or issues.
