Defining Success for Women In Business
Defining Success for Women in
Business
What
is success? As defined by the dictionary it means achievement of short- or long-term
goals. To many, it may equate with financial or career success. However, success
can extend beyond the arena of business to family, friends and community.
In an IMDiversity.com article titled
“Wildly Successful Women,” author Deborah Prussel notes that it’s important
for business women to seize every opportunity to network. Information
can come from anyone, so get connected with other successful, empowered women
with common career goals.
Also, be visible. Develop
contacts and resources and join professional and nonprofit organizations. Attend
trade shows and professional conferences. These are all excellent learning tools
and have the added bonus of networking opportunities. People cannot help, hire
or even promote you if they don't know you, or never see or hear from you.
It’s also important to develop
your skills. Start a skills inventory and develop specific skills that can
move you up the ladder in your field. Specialization is always an added bonus.
Ask for opportunities to learn new skills and at the same time try going out
of your comfort zone. Community colleges are excellent, low-cost vehicles for
education.
The Women’s Council of REALTORS®
is committed to presenting education programs that enhance the personal and
business lives of our members and provide good role-models for success in the
community. With that in mind, the WCR will present “That Woman is a Success”
– the first of a new annual series honoring and highlighting successful women.
Billie Redmond, president and CEO of Trademark Properties, will be the presenter
for this session, scheduled for Oct. 1 at 111
Realtor Way.
Redmond
is active in community and nonprofit organizations such as the Board of Directors
of WakeMed Health & Hospitals, Paragon Commercial Bank, Raleigh Area Development
Authority, Carolina Hurricanes Kids’N Community Foundation and Triangle Community
Foundation, and serves as co-chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee. She is
also an inductee in the YWCA Academy of Women, and was named A Woman Extraordinaire,
2006 REALTOR® of the Year by TCAR and Tar Heel of the Week by the News &
Observer.
